A BIG Step Up: Littles Build 'Ramp to Freedom' for Local Teacher

Through the 'Ramp to Freedom Project' Littles learn valuable trade skills while constructing a wheelchair ramp for a beloved educator.

DECATUR, IL — A group of Littles and proved that when the community comes together, they can achieve something truly monumental. Partnering with the United Way - Decatur & Mid-Illinois and the Metro Decatur Home Builders Association, matches took part in the Ramp to Freedom Project, giving back to the community in a BIG way.

Constructing Skills, Creating Accessibility

The project provided a unique, hands-on learning environment right on the build site. Youth were paired with and taught by industry experts, including members of the Metro Decatur Homebuilders Association, the team from Design-Air Heating & Air Conditioning, and dedicated board member Jim Hall.

Throughout the build, the youth mastered several practical skills, including:

• The proper and safe operation of power drills and construction tools.

• The fundamentals of structural assembly and teamwork.

• The invaluable lesson of how trade skills can be used to uplift others.

The final result of their hard work? A brand-new, sturdy wheelchair ramp that restores independence for a local teacher.
