Kevin & Crishon

August 2010

At the beginning of the school year, Chrishon was so excited to meet his Big Brother, Kevin so they could “have fun together.”  Since then, they have spent time together at Brush College School each week where they worked on homework like math and reading, played games, and went out to recess.  One day, they started talking about NFL teams. Chrishon said his favorite team is the Philadelphia Eagles. At that moment, Kevin’s eye caught the map on the wall near them so he asked Chrishon if he knew where Philadelphia was located. He looked confused and said he was not really sure. Kevin took this opportunity to help Chrishon learn his states and capitals, which he would be tested on later that semester. They started on the eastern states, but   Chrishon was reluctant at first.  After about 3 weeks, he began to realize that he was really learning them.  One day, while working on the Midwestern states as the lunch bell rang, Chrishon begged to stay with Kevin and continue learning as he almost knew them all. They finished the lesson and went back to class a little late, but Chrishon’s teacher quickly gave forgiveness as she was proud to hear that he knew them all and was enthusiastic about his accomplishment. Later, when the rest of the class began learning the states and capitals, the teacher asked Chrishon to help her teach them, which gave him a sense of pride and confidence.

After accomplishing the states and capitals, they began working on memorizing the Presidents, but ran out of time before school let out for summer.  Kevin said, “I definitely plan to work on the Presidents this fall and hope to have that done by election time so he has a bit of a goal to achieve.”  Chrishon will begin sixth grade this fall, and Kevin hopes to continue his academic achievements and strengthen their friendship even more.
